Thanks Adrian:

I right-clicked on the gray area and when I selected the option for
'Connect to an existing IPython kernel,' it asked me the following:

Provide an IPython kernel connection file. What would that be?

That assumes you have started another instance of IPython elsewhere and want to connect to it. That is not necessary to use IPython in Spyder, just select the option 'Open an IPython console'. That will open an IPython session in the Spyder IPython tab.

Try right clicking on the gray area. This should bring up a context
    menu
that allows you to open a new IPython console or connect to an
    existing
    IPython kernel
