Okay, thanks. I think it is fixed now. Per your suggestions I started 
looking carefully at versions and dates on the spyder.py files. In the 
python 2.7 root spyder was at 2.3.0 but as you noted in the py3k 
environment it was at 2.3.0rc1. I had used conda to update the root 
environment but not the py3k environment. I have now gone back and used 
conda to update spyder in the py3k environment and now the profiler works! 
Conda shows spyder at 2.3.0 in both environments. I notice that there is 
also something called spyder-app which conda reports at 2.2.5 in the root 
but at 2.3.0rc1 in py3k. But, that doesn't seem to be a problem as things 
seem to be fixed. Thanks again.
