Thanks for the tip. Seems like it should work. I tried installing the
new spyder package using the Winpython control panel package manager
(via the 2.3.1 zip). But after installing, spyder would no longer even
open - just a flash of a command prompt. I wound up reinstalling
Winpython to get it working again.
But I can report that everything I want to do seems to work in the
Ipython console of Winpython after I apply "%pylab". That is, a
separate window for the figure and plots/charts that update after a
plt.show.
You can have that happen automatically by going to:
Preferences --> IPython console --> Graphics
