According to Matplotlib guys, this error was fixed in 1.4.2 and
introduced in 1.4.0. So a conda update will take care of that part of
the problem.
However, after testing this problem in my own virtual machines, I found
that Spyder is not working in non-ascii Windows accounts. This will be
fixed in 2.3.2.
