In case it helps, I'm having the same problem with Mac OS X 10.9.5. I try 
opening Spyder from the terminal, and this is what I got (after, of course, 
more than 10 minutes of waiting):

Dec 31 15:16:53 indy.local Spyder[601] <Notice>: LSOpenURLsWithRole() 
failed with error -600 for the file /Applications/Spyder.app.

Dec 31 15:16:56 indy.local Spyder[601] <Notice>: WARNING: Unexpected error 
discovering local network interfaces: 'SysOutput' object has no attribute 
'flush'
I'm still doing research on this to see if I can solve the problem...
