I think this idea could be extended to the Python/IPython consoles, so that the helper is available anywhere you need it. In the consoles I guess it would be straightforward to check if either np.array (or just array?) np.matrix (or just matrix) are available in the namespace.
I could even generalize this widget so that it can be reused for any other similar use case that may appear in the future with other libraries.
