You need to make sure to have pip 9 to install the latest IPython.

I am trying to install spyder on a clean system (SuSE Leap42.2) using
the command 'pip install spyder', but it fails when towards the end
when trying to install Ipython, I get the following message

I think I am doing something dumb, as in the past I have not had to
install Ipython separately.
