My response was a possible answer to this question: the ledger balance
takes ALL transactions.
Where as the reporting part (trial balance) is narrowed to a period. So
if you made a typo and have a transaction in 
eg. Previous year or next year, that single transaction falls outside
the trial balance report range.. To minimize typo risk it might be a
good idea to set default year and ask confirmation when year is in past
or future. Might slow down input but is not unfamiliar in other
accounting packs.
