Here I am talking to myself again. Apologies for not acknowledging any replies, but I have yet to see even my own reply (Dieter, any chance you can switch to another list server?).
This is to let everyone know that I fixed my problem by upgrading to 1.8.4 and re-posting all vendor and customer invoices. This magically caused all the garbage entries in COGS and Inventory to be cleaned out.
