For what it's worth and my limited experience, you cannot host more than one certificate per IP address, therefore name based virtual hosts cannot share certificates or even function properly since the certificate is bound to the IP address.
However an IP based virtual host can be given a separate certificate on the same server just on a different IP address. I hope this helps figure it out. I know this can be frustrating.
