In using rpms, configuring ssl occurs after compiling, while compiling apache with --enable-module=ssl from source involves creating a test cert, which is basically what you want here. That's all well and good, but you need to remember that you can run only one secure server per copy of apache. You can install more than one instance of apache with some pretty severe customization, etc. You need to compile these all from sources.
