I created an AR account specifically for Cash sales and debit to petty cash with the credit to my sales account. When I do the daily cash sheet I just do it as an AR transaction (not an invoice). So far the only glitch I've had with this is that I need to use my chart of accounts for the sales and sales tax accounts to do my monthly sales tax check to the state. I guess there would be a way to have this come up using the sales tax report but I'm not much on the code side. I just need something that works, even if its kinda kludgy.
