From what I can tell. I have properly defined my column width at 2cm...
and that format 2cm is recognized by Laytex (I also switched it to 20mm,
and tested 60mm for my description column). In my example, you can
change the width of description from 6cm to any other length and the the
column responds, but my primary column for Number... does not respond, I
must conclude that there is an user error (most likely) or that there is
a bug (not very likely) that prevents me from adjusting the width of the
first column. I've been reading the links provided. Its still way above
me at this point, but I am still reading and experimenting.
Thanks so far, if you come up with another idea please let me know. Does
it look like I have the right format for a fixed column width for Number?

You produce a column with fixed width of 20mm like this:
