Hmm...I would try and set up a differently named Alias for your SQL2000
installation on the CF machine like DATA2000 or something.  You should be able
to do this in the Client Network Utility for SQL Server.

Do you have MDAC 2.6 installed on the CF box?  It makes connecting to SQL2000
installations a whole lot easier to configure, especially when you factor in a
named instance of SQL2000.
