*Risky* idea ahead...

Hey, Bradford... I was wondering if perhaps rather than defragging 12 or
69 times or whatever, perhaps it'd be easier to shut down your
SQL Server, and then completely copy off the MDF (and/or LDF) files to
another machine or drive, and then copy them back, and turn on SQL
again.

That might be faster than defragging, especially if your free space is a
small proportion of your disk space.

When defragging a disk that has never been defragmented, it will require
that
you do the defragmentation process several times. The larger the drive
the
more times
you will need to run defrag to fully defragment the drive.

You can expect that on a 30 gig drive, where most all of the file space
is indicated to be red - fragmented, it will take you upwards of 12
times
to fully defrag the drive.

Also, the amount of free space on the drive will affect the number of
times
you will
need to do the initial defragmentation.

At least 21% free drive space is required to perform the defragmentation
process.

Each time you run the defragmentation process, you will note that there
is
more and
more blue on the graph.

Also, once you have fully defragmented a disk, if you run a scheduled
task
at least
once a week, or greater if your disk is heavily used. When doing this
scheduled
defragmentation, you will need only run it once each time the task is
run.
This can be done as a Windows Scheduled Task.

FYI from my NA experience!

Is there a way to automate sql services to stop and restart
periodically? I
would like to schedule monthly defrags at night and need to shut down
sql
services in order to defrag mdf and ldf files?
