Here's the solution:  you have to convert and format every occurrence of the
dates or they revert to simple strings, so the query that works  reads as
follows:

SELECT 
   TO_DATE(T.DATEENROLCONFIRMED, 'ddmmyyyy') EnrollDate
   FROM 
   Servername.tblinvoicedetails T
  WHERE 
TO_DATE(T.DATEENROLCONFIRMED, 'ddmmyyyy') < TO_DATE('05102003', 'ddmmyyyy'>

ORDER BY TO_DATE(T.DATEENROLCONFIRMED, 'ddmmyyyy')


Seems very clumsy but I guess it puts all the control in the hands of the
programmer.  Makes me appreciate my normal environment of MS SQLServer
however.
