In Access the main system table is msysobjects but IIRC it only gives you
info at the table level, not the column level.

I did once achieve what you're trying to do using ADO via COM (CFOBJECT).
Unfortunately I can't find the code right now.

It worked, although the set of data types reported were very abstract ones -
they just about let you distinguish an integer from a floating-point number
from a character type from a date.
