You can try using SQL Server Express. It's free. The only limit is
replication and the database size is limited to 2 gig for SQL 2005. For SQL
Express 2008 they have upped the DB size limit to 8 or 10 gig. Should be
good enough for development.

Are databases created/modified on MS SQLServer 2008 compatible with
SQLServer2005 files?    I'm considering upgrading my development machine,
and the Action Pack contains SQL2008, not SQL2005.

But my web servers have SQL2005 on them.
