The core engine is the same between editions, as far as I understand
it, just limited in the number of CPU cores and/or memory it can use,
the maximum size of the databases, the lack of some of the business
tools and features, and other things like being a master for
replication.  I have some single-server websites that use MS-SQL 2008
Express as a back-end and it performs just as well if not better than
SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition did.
