Hey David -
anyone who goes through the trouble to write a three page essay on a
license suggestion is OK in my book, how does the Python Software
Foundation license sound ?
Hi Michael! How about really great!! :-) I can't think of anything that
would make the licensing issue more transparent to python programmers
and facilitate building a community around this library.
I think you will find others very happy about this possibility as well.
For myself, I work with zope2, zope3 and django particularly. For zope3,
I have been anxious for to find a good library that wraps sql nicely so
that views can also be made easily from the models. Again something
compatible with commercial development with zope(and also that works
nicely to simply python sql development)
I have also wanted to work with TurboGears also for a while now. The
philosophy and project is really excellent however SQLObject has been
the showstopper for me as far as licensing. I have been contemplating
possibilities for a wrapper that could serve to replace SQLObjet as a
result. I am already using cherrypy's wsgi server in my development with
Django and I am already using some of the other libraries like
formencode. This has the potential to put TurboGears framework on the
same solid footing with compatible licensing.
There are many combinations I can think of. I program for desktop too
where I work with wxPython. I can tell you, the possibilities are really
exciting and this potential has made my day!
Also, do we have any concerns about licensing of the various adapters
SQLAlchemy includes ? cx_oracle, pysqlite seem pretty open, MySQL/
Python is on the CNRI Python License (not sure how that differs from
PSF ...) and psycopg seems like its on some GPL with extra language.
On the adapters, I can only provide advice about sqlite and postgres
since I moved away from MySQL when they changed their licensing practice
a couple years ago. I have used postgres ever since. Pysqlite is totally
fine. psycopg draws questions of licensing frequently. It is a situation
where it is dual licensed also. GPL outside of Zope, ZPL inside zope so
that it could be used for commercial development without difficulty. The
developer of psycopg has expessed intent concerning the license but has
not changed it to something else. Interestingly, initd is responsible
for pysqlite under a BSD-like license.
In any case, all I can say is that I am very happy about this potential
and the future possibilities for library. I look forward supporting
initiatives to promote SQLAlchemy. Many thanks Michael for being
receptive to this potential and for a fine library that has a great future.
Regards,
David
