out of curosity does anyone know a good online ansi sql reference?
There isn't one -- ANSI makes money selling copies of the standard, and doesn't want to dilute that.
The good news is, older versions are quite affordable. I think my copy of SQL 92 was around $30 when I got it a couple years ago.
