Are you sure ? Did you check that really nothing happened in the DB ? (Sorry for the distrust ;-) I'd expect myself to miss such a check sometimes, e.g. when it's late in the evening...) And which SA version do you use ?
I experience that SA 0.5.6 issues a correct sequence of: BEGIN UPDATE ... COMMIT when I call session.begin(). (This happens with both "new" and "dirty" objects (probably deleted,too) the same way.)
