That's super ugly.  Just use conditionals. 

I have a few "internal api" calls that have 10+ arguments, all of which 
control the SqlAlchemy query.  

don't be afraid to use multiple filter() statements, and remember that 
all/most of the methods return a query object that can be further limited.
