Of course you are right. My problem code was basically the PythonEnum class in https://groups.google.com/d/topic/sqlalchemy/5yvdhl9ErMo/discussion. Deleting the "*(m.name for m in enum_class)," from the __init__ call seems to have fixed the problem.
