What time zone are you in? (grin) Both of your problems (17 - 5 and 9 - -3) are equal to 12. sqlite may reference your local zone information, and assume that values in the database are stored in gmt.
Timezone is +930, so close..... but I hadn't thought of that anyway! I think I will have a harder look along these lines.
