Thanks to everybody who sent me email about this problem. All 12543 of you :-)

FWIW, I had found the problem myself at about 8am EST on
Wednesday, but was unable to resolve the trouble before
I was compelled to leave for holiday travels.  My ISP
took a look at the problem and discovered a corrupt
journal file in the EXT3 filesystem that holds the
database.  A fsck and a reboot cleared up the problem.

Not sure how the EXT3 filesystem became currupt.  There
was a power failure a day or two earlier (something about
a bad circuit breaker at the colo facility).  Perhaps there
is a bug in the EXT3 filesystem which can lead to curruption
when a power failure occurs....
