i'm starting to see that. to test a local install, i ran the configure with "--prefix=/home/rpjday/root" and yet, after a susccessful "make", when i ran "make install" it tried to install under /usr. grrrrrr. can it really be *that* broken? i'll just use the Makefile-linux.gcc as a starting point for now and see what happens. rday
