Wolfgang, You didn't say which OS you're using but I thought it was worth pointing out that the umlaut and the other characters in your original message DO show up in the sqlite command line utility on my XP box. I put them in a small database via Python(win) and could display and insert more of them from within the sqlite CLI. I had to cheat slightly and paste them in as I don't have the relevant keys on my British keyboard but that shouldn't affect the actual DB.
