Why?  SQLite 3 is faster, more robust, and much better
and not opening unnecessary files.

I would love to upgrade to SQLite 3.  Unfortunately,
it is too big for our application (middleware for
set-top boxes).  The set-top box we are using has a
RISC architecture, so the size of the compiled code
is substantial (>400K for SQLite 2).

My plan is to convince management to switch to SQLite;
then, in a year or two, when our set-top boxes have
more memory, upgrade to SQLite 3.
