I have a small script which shows this problem: if I run it from the command line I can read from and write to the database. If I run it in a browser it fails at the write with "General error: 14 unable to open database file" (having done the read OK first).
The database has permissions ugo+rwx which ought to mean anyone can read or write it. This is under OS X 10.5.4.
