Thanks Emilio and Kees for doing what should have done - a bit of basic SQL!
Well the problem has been narrowed down to the the Show Table/Modify Data function in SQLit3Manager. If I just do a simple insert from there the default text does not appear. The numeric defaults are ok however. Maybe the "insert puts a ' ' into the field in which case it is not empty - I have no way of knowing. Thanks for you help.
