SQLite already has "unicode support from the ground up". Try using non-Unicode strings and you'll see! The issue some developers have is that they also want collations, case comparisons etc but are not prepared to use the ICU extension which provides about the most correct implementation of those. ie they want something less accurate and smaller/quicker.
