I have found at least one thing in OS X 10.5 that upgrading the out-of-the-box version of SQLite breaks. (I thought it would: I was testing it so I could write documentation.) It's fixed in 10.6 but it seems the standard advice about SQLite and OS X is correct: keep two separate copies.
