A bit could also have flipped without any writing happening. While we view our computer internals as a crisp collection of ones and zeroes they are far more akin to a collection of leaky plumbing and it is impressive that they do manage to keep the ones and zeroes straight so much of the time. In any event I have been asking for per page checksums so that any bit twiddling can be detected accurately and early, even if it comes at the expense of performance and compatibility (hey, some data is that important).
