Thanks Keith Medcalf. Your solution solves my problem. I don't know at what stage my brain lost contact with reality, but I bounded off into fields of increasing complexity rather than pausing and regrouping. After 45+ years developing systems I still fall for this devilish plunge.
Updating reference (an unused field) was simply a convenience to allow me to reset it after unsuccessful attempts rather than restoring the DB. I am chastened and enlightened.
