In older MSVC compilers, variable declarations must be at the head of a block,
not after some code has been generated.

static void fts5SegIterNext(
  Fts5Index *p,                   /* FTS5 backend object */
  Fts5SegIter *pIter,             /* Iterator to advance */
  int *pbNewTerm /* OUT: Set for new term */
 ){
   Fts5Data *pLeaf = pIter->pLeaf;
   int iOff;
   int bNewTerm = 0;
   int nKeep = 0;
+  u8 *a;
+  int n;

   assert( pbNewTerm==0 || *pbNewTerm==0 );
   assert( p->pConfig->eDetail!=FTS5_DETAIL_NONE );

   /* Search for the end of the position list within the current page. */
-  u8 *a = pLeaf->p;
-  int n = pLeaf->szLeaf;
+  a = pLeaf->p;
+  n = pLeaf->szLeaf;

   ASSERT_SZLEAF_OK(pLeaf);
   iOff = pIter->iLeafOffset + pIter->nPos;

   if( iOff<n ){

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely
in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud
of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow!
What a Ride!"
