   This is why I always recommend against u'' strings. Along with coding
pseudocomment they form a good base for subtle bugs.

   Are you sure your original string really has been decoded to a string
that can be encoded in UTF-8? Can you do

u"YOUR ORIGINAL STRING".encode("utf-8")

   and

unicode("YOUR ORIGINAL STRING", "latin1").encode("utf-8")

   ???
