I think there have been 2 or 3 updates since then - all only available via wget from the website.
Feel free to enable debug logging for the update checker (I think it's server.update), then send me your server.log after you think it failed the check.
BTW: the notification probably doesn't show up unless you re-load the web UI. If you leave it open in your browser window for several days, you might miss a notification, too.
