I think it's meant to check whether a certain item_id or url is in favorites, not whether a certain item in the list of favorites exist.
Michael once implemented that for me because I wanted a way to have a "Favorite"-button on the NowPlaying screen in iPeng that turns into a "remove from favorites"-button is something is already in favorites.
