Okay, things got even stranger. I set the logging level for the server to DEBUG instead of ERROR in the log.conf, to see if I could get more information about what went wrong. Then I restarted LMS and watched the server.log while I tried to login to mysqueezebox.com. And... it worked. No errors. And the username and hashed password were suddenly present in the server.prefs.
