Thanks guys for answering and helping. I found the reason to be software players (squeezeLite) on two different machines which was running in background and was not shut down properly, even though the foreground app had terminated. Rebooting these machines eventually also made the players disappear from the player list. One was XSqueeze on a KODI server and the other was SqueezePlay on a Windows 10 machine.
