Thanks for all the feedback - some really useful stuff. I've changed the cache size setting as recommended. I've also spent a couple of hours investigating the Squeezebox CLI, and have worked out how to run a telnet/VBS job on a regular schedule to do an LMS search. I've had it running every 15 minutes for the last couple of hours. So far all of my searches have responded in a few seconds, but the proof of the pudding will be the first search that I try tomorrow morning (I have the first "dummy" search scheduled to go at 8am).
If I don't see a significant improvement I'll look into HDParm to see if I can keep the USB drive "warm". If all of that fails then I guess a hardware solution will be the next thing - a decent internal HDD for the music folder and possibly an SSD for the O/S as well.
