Michael & DrMatt, Thanks for the replies & suggestions. I am using Vista Home (yes, really...), and was attempting to connect through FireFox to the RPi server.
Under pressure to "just get it working", I went back to LMS v7.7.5 (27th Nov. 2014), and have music again. I hope to get another try with 7.9.0 later in the week, so will update the thread if still having problems (and will look at the server log next time...).
