Following rgro's kind suggestion, I find that the settings page can be made to function after loading by choosing more options "..." in Edge & then selecting "Open with Internet Explorer".
That'll do for me atm, it's not as if I need to get at the innards of LMS that often... I'll figure out how to install latest version 7.9.x at a later point. Sorry if this was just a duplication of a "known system feature" notification :D .
