Replying to my own post in case it helps someone...

After connecting the Squeezebox to the router via cable instead of WiFi
the Squeezebox has been playing without a single glitch for over a
month. 

So, the reason was poor network connection over WiFi. Why the WiFi
suddenly went bad is still a mystery, though.

Now back to music listening.
