A bit of experimentation and I found the culprit. I had installed
another plugin last week, ResetVolume, which works perfectly with one
player at a time, but I only have it enable on one player as the other I
keep at a fixed volume. I noticed that shortly after the second player
was turned on (and that can be either player) the sound stopped but the
time marker continued, the sound coming back on after about 10 seconds,
so I determined it must be a sound issue... immediately recalled
installing ResetVolume, removed it, now working perfectly again.

Cheers, David
