I don't have audiofile equipment/speakers anywhere in the house, I'm also 60 years old and my hearing is damaged from too many years in night clubs. I can play MP3 while running on wireless headphones(bragi dash), I can play them in the car; I normally though just play through an LMS to synchronized players around the house and garage. The main player in my living room is a Transporter, connected to a BOSE Lifestyle 5.1 that has the front speakers replaced by Polk Audio. I find I can't really hear the difference between an MP3 VBS 260k using only Stereo(not joint stereo) and FLAC. It's certainly true I could get better speakers, but these fit the bill and are discrete. Ddown in the basement I have a sync'd Squeezebox controller attached via a Yamaha receiver with floor standing JBL speakers and I *think* I can hear the difference but its not enough to make it worth going FLAC. I use Audacity to record, and have a mostly automated audacity chain to do the post processing. The first step is to save the entire album as a WAV file. I'd be happy to share an MP3 track for you to try.
