Deleting all .db-files except persist.db did the trick.
Music & Artist Information uses the image proxy (imgproxy.db) a lot. Please check your MAI settings to see whether it uses a local folder for the artist artwork, too. If so, replace files in there.
However, once again, LMS downloaded artist pictures without any request from my side and without providing a copy in the default location.
No, LMS does not download artist pictures by itself. It's the MAI plugin you told LMS to install ;-).
