the only reason why this is necessary here is because a 3rd party control system needs that otherwise I fully agree and I would never overcomplicated it :-)
But a public port is not public to some 3rd party control system only, but to the world.
You could certainly configure a reverse proxy for control features only, additionally securing it using features of the proxy (apache, nginx etc.). Just don't expose LMS to the internet without any additional protection. Whether it's http or https doesn't really matter.
