Thanks guys! After a lot of scrutiny (I even ran the sever with a year old harddrive backup and updated ubuntu and LMS to the current status), the strange solution to my problem was:
I needed to switch the "CSRF-Schutzstufe" in the LMS security settings from 'medium' to 'off'- and the players showed up again in the App! Very strange.... I have no clue about this cross site stuff (CSRF) and I am pretty sure I never touched those settings before.... or at least not for ages. Anyway. It's all running again - and I am happy!
